Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Magnetic particle testing is a non-destructive testing method for detecting metal surface and non-surface discontinuities and defects in units of various shapes and dimensions made of ferromagnetic materials. This method is not applicable for testing austenitic steel, aluminum, etc., therefore, penetration testing (PT) is used in such cases. Magnetic particle testing is otherwise known as magnetic particle inspection and magnetic defectoscopy.

Magnetic particle testing allows easy detection of thin and tiny cracks with dimensions starting from 0.01mm in width, 0.05-0.08mm in depth and 0.5mm in length. The MT method easily detects surface and internal defects such as cuts, cracks, slag, other inclusions, lack of fusion, and inadequate penetration in welds, as well as similar defects oriented perpendicular to the magnetic field (or at a minimum angle of 30 degrees).

The specialists of WESTERN CENTRAL LABORATORY conduct magnetic particle testing with the use of various DC and AC electromagnets, such as ES-X, MR52, TYP AC 230-B, PMD-70 and STT230/42, as well as certified and environmentally friendly materials.
